BRAT Diet: Recovery from Gastrointestinal Disorders

When should the BRAT diet be followed?

 

After a person has experienced vomiting or diarrhea, this diet should be introduced to help the body readapt to normal nutrition. The diet can relieve the nausea and vomiting that some women have during pregnancy.

 

BRAT diet can add other foods such as: salt biscuits, boiled potatoes or crisp soups. Immediate consumption of dairy products, carbohydrates or fats is not allowed. The latter may cause nausea or may increase diarrhea.

 

Treatment of nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea with BRAT diet

 

Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort may be accompanied by the desire to vomit or even vomiting. These are some of the main symptoms that underlie the main diseases of the gastrointestinal system, caused by viruses, food poisoning, drugs, alcohol, anxiety or pregnancy. In addition, nausea may be a sign of upper respiratory tract illness, involving nasal symptoms.

 

Diarrhea is a manifestation of gastrointestinal disorders, which consists of removing soft consistency chairs. These may be acute, with a sudden onset, which, however, is remedied within a few days with a strict diet or can be chronic, long-lasting. Causes that trigger it may be similar to those of nausea and vomiting.

In the first six hours: as soon as vomiting stops, it is best not to ask for a stomach, not to eat anything, at most to eat an ice cream or candy (melted but not chewed). Then, if nausea persists, you can drink some water with ice.

 

In the first 24 hours (first day): Gradually add clear fluids if the vomiting has stopped. Start with small swallows. You can drink: water, apple juice, acid-free natural juices, weak teas, no fat soups. If the symptoms of nausea come back, for an hour or two, nothing will be consumed.

The next day will be introduced into the diet: bananas, rice, apple mashed, biscuits, boiled cereals, toasted bread.

On the third day will be added foods such as boiled eggs, compotes, cooked vegetables, white meat (without skin) of chicken or turkey.

 

What foods should be avoided

 

The following foods will not be consumed:

– milk and dairy products – for three days;

– fried, fat and spicy foods;

– pork, beef, salmon and sardines;

– raw vegetables: pasta, beets, cabbage, corn, onions;

– citrus fruit – pineapple, oranges, grapefruit, tomatoes;

– cherries, grapes, figs, raisins, rhubarb, berries.

 

Do not drink very cold or hot liquids, avoid alcohol, coffee and juices that have caffeine in the composition. It is recommended to consume many fluids to avoid dehydration due to fluids loss due to diarrhea or vomiting. Rest and avoiding efforts are very important in the recovery process.

 

If the doctor thinks necessary, medical treatment will also be established.

 

If after 24 hours of strict diet, the patient still has diarrhea, plus fever, weight loss, dizziness and fainting, rectal or abdominal bleeding, consult the doctor.

 

How long should the BRAT diet be followed?

 

Both adults and children should follow the BRAT diet for a short period of time, as it does not provide the nutrients that a healthy diet should contain. Following the prolonged BRAT diet, the body will be weakened, as not enough nutrients are provided.

After the symptoms improve, they will gradually be introduced into the daily meals, fruits and vegetables (but not earlier than 24-48 hours after vomiting or diarrhea).

 

Does the BRAT Diet Be an Option for Children?

 

This diet is recommended by most pediatricians for children suffering from gastrointestinal disorders. The basic principle of the diet is not to overstretch the stomach, and the number of chairs to be reduced. However, at present, experts believe that BRAT diet is not even the best option for children because the foods involved in this diet have low fiber, protein and fat content, insufficient to restore the intestinal tract. Pediatricians recommend that normal, balanced and appropriate nutrition be restored for the age of each child within 24 hours of illness. The diet, in this case, should include a variety of fruits and vegetables, yogurt, meat and carbohydrates.

 

Both adults and children should drink plenty of fluids when they are ill, to prevent dehydration.

 

The emergency medical service should be contacted if the patient experiences any of the following symptoms:

– diarrhea that lasts for more than three days;

– temperature greater than 39 degrees Centigrade;

– urinate a little;

– delirium;

– Absence of tears

– deep pallor on cheeks.
